•keeping a sketchbook

sketch of an Easter basketAs an artist, keeping a sketchbook is a high priority. It provides a space to develop concepts, to work out compositions, and to play with ideas. It allows me to record the development of an idea, as well as practice techniques and mediums.

Rather than trying to create perfect drawings, use your sketchbook to capture lines, shapes, textures and values. Don't worry about the end product.

Sketchbook Tips

I like to keep a sketchbook and an ink pen on me at all times, as I never know when an interesting composition, light pattern, or color scheme will come my way.

When you feel like there's nothing to draw, try arranging a few everyday items and add some strong lighting.

The contrast of light and dark creates shadows and shapes and everyday mundane objects become amazingly interesting.

Look for new viewpoints of objects to record in your sketchbook. Draw an item, like the pear on the left, from many angles.
